Also taking place in Melbourne in the spring time is the world’s richest 2400-metre handicap race the Caulfield Cup ($2.5 million), the Caulfield Guineas and the Australasian weight-for-age championship, the Cox Plate.

Sydney is also host to some world-renowned racing, which occurs as part of the harbour city’s Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Perhaps the most famous event is the world’s richest race for two-year-olds, the Golden Slipper, which takes place on the same day as the BMW for stayers.

Other well-known and lucrative Sydney races include the Doncaster Mile and the Sydney Cup.

Famous Racecourses

As host of the Melbourne Cup, Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne is known globally as one of the world’s best tracks. Melbourne is also host to two other outstanding racing facilities in Caulfield and Moonee Valley which each host their share of elite racing action.
